Throughout its 198 years of history, Mitre's industrial roots meant that the technical side of the business was taken very seriously. As the world's first football brand, our dedication to the sport has not changed despite the beautiful game's radical transformation over the last decade.
In 1817, Benjamin Crook started a small leather tannery in Huddersfield, England. Named after himself as the founder of the company, Crook & Sons Ltd specialized in leatherware, producing footballs and rugby balls for clubs all over the world.
The name was changed to Mitre in 1949, and by 1959, Mitre expanded its product range into cricket, soft leather and bags. Sports footwear followed soon after.
Manchester United legend Denis Law signed on as Mitre's first spokesman in 1964 before the brand went on to become the official ball supplier for the English Football Association. Mitre has continued to be part of English football's heritage until today, as the official match ball for the English League Cup (Capital One Cup). In 1992, Mitre was appointed the official ball supplier to the newly formed English Premier League.
